About Development Engineering

Development Engineering is a new global problem solving discipline incubated at UC Berkeley.  The discipline integrates engineering, economics, business, natural resource development, and social sciences to develop technological interventions that address the needs of low-income communities around the world. 

Development Engineering is administered by the Blum Center and offered by the Graduate Group in Development Engineering, a 30-member faculty coalition who hail from over a dozen schools and departments. 

Currently, students may pursue the:

Master in Development Engineering — a three-semester, 15-month professional training program for careers in social impact, social entrepreneurship, and sustainability

Development Engineering PhD Designated Emphasisa PhD minor for UC Berkeley doctoral students from any department whose dissertation research includes topics related to the application of technology to address the needs of people living in poverty
